If your custom sign wears down, all of the money that you poured into your custom metal sign will go to waste and you will need to soon replace it. Therefore, it is important to make sure your signs are made out of materials that are very durable.
Metal signs are the most durable because they are the best able to resist wear and tear. Also, metal signs can be engineered to look like other materials, so if you do not like the look of metal, the sign can be engineered to look like something else.
One of the downsides of many metals is that they can suffer from corrosion. Fortunately, this is not the case with all metals, such as aluminum. Aluminum does corrode, but then naturally forms a protective layer that stops the corrosion process. Another advantage of aluminum is that it is lighter than other metals. Therefore, the support for your sign will not have to be as sturdy. Also, if the sign falls, it is less likely to cause damage to nearby property or damage the sign itself.
If you aren't as concerned about corrosion or weight, steel with a protective coating is another great option. Steel is less likely to deform, which could be a problem if your business is located in an area that has strong winds.
If you are not concerned as much with wear and tear, but more concerned with corrosion, you should consider molded plastic. Molded plastic is especially easy to mass produce, so if you will need more than one sign, this is a good option. For example, if you own multiple storefronts and want to have continuity between the signs, choose molded plastic. Molded plastic is one of the strongest forms of plastic and it can be engineered to have subtle details that can be useful when reinforcing brand recognition.
Less Durable Options
Of course, if you're not worried about durability, you might want to consider various other design options, such as painted plywood, painted glass or a fabric sign. What matters is the type of image that you would like to project to your customers. Wooden signs can make your business look more traditional. Fabric signs can be more affordable and it is easier to print a larger amount of information onto a long strip of fabric. Make sure to consider each material before committing to one.
